The Butterfly
2010 December

I went to visit Katie in hospital the week before she got married and although very poorly she was so excited to be marrying her soul mate. I was humbled and so in awe of her bravery that she inspired me to write this poem.
The Butterfly
A butterfly flew through the door and landed on my bed
With fluttering wings, looked up at me
and this is what she said
Open up a dictionary, turn the page and take a look inside
Start with A for Angel - what you find will make you smile
It reads beautiful young girl, only just 3 decades old
A massive, dazzling heart made of purest solid gold
Flick over the pages and turn to letter C
This word describes her absolutely perfectly
C is for Courageous it means brave and without fear
This girl is all those things and has been all this year
Keep looking through the book and stumble upon D
The word Determination is the one that you will see
A mind that is determined and resolute and firm
To beat this nasty evilness that’s poisoning her world
We’ll carry on quickly now and arrive at letter I
Underneath the bold type, a lovely word you’ll spy
“Inspiration” spell the letters - and she is from top to toe
The most inspiring, brilliant person you have the pleasure
to know
The next word in this alphabet begins with a capital P
It means Precious and adored and loved in abundancy
The butterfly sat very still whilst I listened a little more
“Don’t be sad”, she said to me “don’t be sad at all…”
A happy occasion comes next week –
You have a wedding to attend
Smile on your face and in your heart,
think sparkly, glittering thoughts
And celebrate the marriage of a very special friend.
